AI search optimization (AIO/AEO) is making your business the answer assistants give when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews a question you should win. It is not a replacement for SEO — it is built on it. The levers: answer-first content, question-shaped structure, FAQ and schema markup, unambiguous business facts everywhere, and being present in the sources assistants actually retrieve from.
The search box is no longer the only front door. A hospital administrator asks ChatGPT to shortlist agencies. A procurement engineer asks Perplexity for suppliers with a specific certification. Google itself now answers many questions above the first link. In each case an AI reads the web and hands the buyer a short, confident answer with a handful of citations — and either you are in that answer or you do not exist for that buyer.
Demystifying this removes most of the bad advice. When someone asks an assistant a commercial question, four things happen in sequence — and each one is a gate you can fail or pass:
| Classic SEO | AIO / AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list of links | Be the cited source in a synthesized answer |
| Unit of competition | The page | The passage — a quotable, self-contained answer |
| Keywords | Head terms + long tail | Full questions, in the buyer's phrasing |
| Structure | Helpful, crawlable | Answer-first paragraphs, question-shaped H2s, FAQ blocks |
| Trust signals | Links, authority, experience signals | Same, plus fact consistency across the whole web |
| Schema | Helpful for rich results | Core infrastructure — how machines verify who you are |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Citations, AI referral traffic, assistant answer checks |
Read the right column twice and you notice: everything in it also improves the classic SEO in the left column. There is no conflict between the two.
Every important page opens with a 2–3 sentence direct answer to the question the page exists for — the passage an assistant can lift whole.
H2s that mirror how buyers ask ("How much does X cost?") map your content to retrieval, for search engines and assistants alike.
FAQPage, Article, Service, LocalBusiness and Product markup make your facts machine-readable — the difference between readable and verifiable.
Who you are, what you do, where, for whom — stated identically on your site, Google Business Profile, directories and LinkedIn. Inconsistency reads as risk.
Assistants favor content with specifics: numbers, processes, honest trade-offs, named authors. Generic filler is exactly what they skip.
Visible dates and updated content matter more when a machine is deciding what is still true. Stale pages lose citations to fresher ones.
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google what your buyers ask. Track who gets cited. That list is your competitive scoreboard now.
Retrieval runs on search. Rankings, speed and internal linking remain the substrate everything above sits on — see SEO vs Ads.
"AI-optimized" is becoming an empty label, so here is the concrete version. When we run AIO as part of a marketing program, the work is: rewriting money pages answer-first, building the FAQ and schema layer, reconciling business facts across the web, producing question-shaped content at scale with AI-led pipelines (drafting, structuring, technical passes — with human editorial accountability), and a monthly assistant-visibility check across the questions that matter for the client. It is systematic content engineering, measured by whether assistants start citing you — and every piece of it also strengthens classic rankings.
Two overcorrections are circulating. One says SEO is dead — it is not; retrieval runs on search, and most commercial journeys still touch a results page. The other says AI traffic does not matter yet — also wrong; the volume is growing fast, the buyers using assistants are disproportionately decision-makers doing real evaluation, and early citations compound the way early rankings once did. The sensible position is unglamorous: build the answer-first layer now, keep the SEO foundation strong, measure both.
AIO — also called AEO or GEO — is the practice of making your business the answer AI assistants give. SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of links; AIO optimizes for being retrieved, trusted and cited when assistants answer a buyer's question directly.
No — AI search is built on top of search. Assistants retrieve from indexes and favor sources that rank and read well. Strong SEO remains the foundation; sites with weak SEO rarely get cited.
Ask them what your buyers would ask, across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI results. Note who gets cited and read those pages — they show what the assistant considered credible enough to quote.
Structure, mostly: answer-first paragraphs, question-shaped headings, FAQ blocks, schema, unambiguous facts, current dates. It reads better for humans too — clarity is the shared requirement.
We will run the assistant checks your buyers run, show you who gets cited and why — and map the gap to a plan.
